DHAKA – Political instability and diplomatic friction have intensified in Bangladesh as the country prepares for a landmark general election scheduled for February 12, 2026.

The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is struggling to maintain law and order following a wave of violence. Last week, the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the 2024 “July Uprising,” triggered a nationwide security clampdown. Meanwhile, religious minorities face a “state of panic” following crude bomb attacks on churches in Dhaka, prompting military guards to be stationed ahead of Christmas.

Diplomatic Strain with India

Relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have reached a new low. On Wednesday, India summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner to express “strong concerns” over deteriorating security and threats against the Indian mission in Dhaka. This followed a protest march by the “July Oikya” group demanding the extradition of ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, who remains in India.

Election Uncertainty

While the Election Commission has requested additional police protection for its officials, analysts warn of a “muted” pre-poll atmosphere. With the Awami League party banned and former PM Khaleda Zia on life support, the political landscape remains fractured.

“The cycle of revenge politics continues to test the nation’s democratic reset,” noted a recent regional report.
